Ok so you have heard of Open Source, and for those who haven’t, here is the definition that the “ Open Source Initiative” gives us:

Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in.

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) is a non-profit corporation formed to educate about and advocate for the benefits of open source and to build bridges among different constituencies in the open-source community.

Some consider open source a philosophy, others consider it a pragmatic methodology. In plain English, Open Source is a license given to certain applications and software which code is open to the public so you can download it tweak it, change it, improve it and upload it again, that is how most amazing programs are build, like MySQL, Trolltech, Mozilla, Thunderbird , and that is why we love Open Source, Is free, is constantly improving itself, more apps are on the way, No more money to spend… But wait, so I understand that there are such great human creatures in this world that will work for hours and hours, skip their bedtimes, meals.. just for helping others get such software and tools to get their daily lives running? Well that sounds great, but I don’t think that is their final goal, Everything starts with a great Idea and the means to help others for free but rewards always comes, Just like Linus Torvalds , he is worth $20 Bs , of course he is a great and amazing guy and he deserves every penny and maybe he is one of the good open source guys who really didn’t want anything in return and like him there are many, but there are others that will think, wow ill come up with an idea put it in paper begin coding upload it one the web call it Open Source so everyone on this world would help and improve it and when billions of people depend on it I will claim my share, as the founder and owner I will sell it for millions. Take a look at this numbers: Here are some companies that since 2005 have been bought summing up Billions, like: Sun Microsystems announcing the purchase of open source pioneer MySQL for $1 billion, Nokia agreed to pay $153 million for the open source mobile-software maker Trolltech; Money also comes from selling add-ons, service contracts, and hardware to go with the software. Mozilla gets most of its money from Google, which pays to be the browser’s default search provider which was worth between $1.5 billion and $4 billion.

So this is what I think, there are no Open Source Billionaires but there are Open Source Millionaires they will not earn Billions like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs but they will earn Millions and hopefully some will get into Fortune’s 500, but there is no poverty in the Open Source World. And I don’t have a problem with that, because their Idea was great, they tried to help other people with their knowledge , everyone helped and years after they are been rewarded. Just like the expression “Don’t Re-invent the Wheel…Improve It”, just like the The Light bulb OpenSource Project: 1st light bulb that was built by Humphry Davy (an Englishman) in 1809. Thomas Alva Edison improved the invention and based his improvements on a patent he purchased from inventors Henry Woodward & Matthew Evans who patented their bulb in 1875.

As you can see helping others always gets rewards, every software out there that was made with helping others in mind, maybe some of them had a hidden agenda of becoming millionaires, well it doesn’t matter, what really matters is that they tried to help in their own way.

SO KEEP IT UP AND DON’T BE ASHAMED TO SHOW OFF YOUR MILLIONS YOU ARE OUR CELEBRITIES..OUR GEEK CELEBRITIES AND YOU DESERVE EVERY PENNY

Biz Stone is the co founder of twitter, one of many networks that are changing the way the world communicates.

Christopher Isaac Stone, Biz Stone born on march 10, 1974 in Boston and grew up in Wellesley, Massachusetts. If you are wondering about his pseudonym BIZ , well here is the short story: He said in an interview that Biz was short for his own ineptitude. He couldn’t say his full name, which is Christopher Isaac Stone, so he said Bizaber instead of Christopher when he was very young. So his parentes and friends start calling him Biz because of that. He tried to tell people his name but they wouldn’t have it. They insisted on calling him Biz Stone ( Which is a great name by the way ), so he began using it on the web, blogging and when he started writing books He used it as his name. So now it is pretty much it, everybody calls him BIZ.

His entrepreneurial spirit showed at an early age when at school he founded a lacrosse team in high school. Stone then went to Northeastern University, on a scholarship and majored in English and teaches an annual master class at Oxford’s Business School.

From the past decade Biz has been working on the various large scale projects. In 1999 Biz worked as a creative director with Xanga which is a social networking and blogging service.

Stone has published two books on the origins and social significance of our changing communication and has lectured on this subject all over the world.

In 2003 Biz moved on to join Google as a senior specialist for a recently acquired Blogger.com team. Biz helped re launch the service and grow it significantly. He met Evan Williams at Google, later they both left Google to start with their own company. Twitter was founded in 2007.

Twitter is a communications network that allows people to keep in touch via cell phone and/or the internet. Users can follow their friends or about anyone registered on the service or search for topics of interest discussed at that moment. Twitter is portrayed as a place for bursts of activity and randomness.

Stone said that it needs to make efforts to monetize more with his popular internet service. Twitter co-founder Biz stone is outlining various initiatives to generate revenue through offering premium features for the commercial users of twitter.

With millions of users, Twitter is an innovative forum that connects users from all over the world. Jack was born in 1976 and grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. At a young age, he was interested in dispatch routing and technological enhancements. He created open source software that is still being utilized by several cab companies. His ultimate goal was to cultivate a real time peer-to-peer network. After graduating from the prestigious Missouri University of Science and Technology, Jack would relocate to California. It is there that he would form an Internet dispatch company for taxis, couriers, and emergency services.

Inspired by commercial ventures, he hoped to launch a premier mode of communication; this would include user output status, shared along a vast database of users and friends. He approached text-messaging specialists, Odeo, who were highly interested in Jack’s idea. Together with Biz Stone, they incorporated SMS features and created Twitter in less than a month. The highly popular venture would receive financing backing from Evan Williams, formerly of Google.

Twitter would soar in popularity and expand at rapid rates. With the inclusion of “tweets”, users would be able to post messages and follow current trends. From entertainment and sports to politics and movies, it served as the perfect venue for online social interaction. Today, Twitter has surpassed other social forums in many capacities. With its user-friendly interface, friends are able to communicate instantaneously. You can also manage trend settings and other information. Dorsey, CEO, has seen his ideas come to fruition, but is always looking to improve the service. From uptime to paid features, he wants to expand on Twitter’s potential while facilitating user requests.

Twitter is also compatible with other social networks and mobile devices. From updates to the latest tweets, it services a wide array of customers with high-end technology. With new enhancements on the market, Twitter will continue to grow by leaps and bounds.

Sergey Mikhailovich Brin who’s net worth is US$17.5 billion and is the world’s 24th richest person is the cofounder and president at Google Inc. He is a native of Moscow, Russia and educated in America. His family emigrated to USA when he was 17. He received his Bachelor of Science degree with honors in mathematics and computer science from university of Maryland, college park in 1993. Brin began his graduate study in computer science at Stanford University. He met Larry Page at Stanford and worked on a project that began Google. Together they founded Google inc. in 1998.

Sergey’s research includes search engines, information extraction data mining of large text and scientific data. He has published more than a dozen academic papers. Sergey has been a speaker at various business and technology forums.

Now let us take a look at his personal life. Back in his childhood he has had a tough life as he was in Russia and being a Jew his father was discriminated and was not even allowed to attend college. It was then when his father decided to emigrate to USA, otherwise Google would never have happened. He now leads a luxurious life. Sergey Brin and Larry Page made news when they purchased a used Boeing 767 which they modified to a large customized private jet and not only that they are paying $1.3 million (£650,000) a year to park, land and take off from Moffett Field, a quiet, government-run airstrip in northern California.

What is the relation between Servers, the OLPC initiative, and films (like Titanic) ? The answer is Linux: an operative system based, like all operating systems, in a kernel. Yes! Even Microsoft admitted that 60% of their web servers run over Linux, instead of Windows Server. And over 95% desktop and server computers in the film industry run over Linux, too.

It’s worth noting, however, than even though the Linux (GNU/Linux) operating system is largely based on community-contributed software, the most important and central part of the system was an idea developed by one single person. His name: Linus Torvalds. He’s an interesting guy, and a single article wouldn’t be able to describe him. However, I’ll try to give you a context for further research and maybe even inspiration.

Linus was born in Helsinki, Finland, on December 28 1969. He attended the University of Helsinki graduating in 1996, with a master’s degree in computer science. As a cultural note, he’s also a 2nd lieutenant (ballistic calculation officer) in the Finnish Army.

After being exposed to UNIX, he wrote his M. Sc. Thesis “Linux: A Portable Operative System”. The Linux project began in 1991 as a terminal emulator, developed in MINIX (an academic UNIX written by Andrew Tanenbaum, a teacher and developer I also recommend you make a research about) by using the GNU CC as compiler.

Later, when Linus realized he had wrote a kernel, he announced the result on Usenet and the project development continued. Nowadays, Linus’ code is only about 2% of the Linux code.

In what it comes to personal life, Linus is the grandson of a noted Finnish poet, Ole Torvalds. He’s married to Tove Torvalds (a kindergarten teacher and karate champions (I also think it’s a funny combination )), and has 3 daughters. He calls himself an atheist and thinks organized religions lead to misuses of power.

After working for the US-based company “Transmeta”, from 1996 to 2003, on 2003 he began focusing exclusively on the Open Source Development Labs, a consortium formed by big companies like IBM, RedHat, Novell and HP. He used it to focus mainly on the Linux Kernel. The OSDL merged with the Free Standars Group in early 2007 and became the Linux Foundation.

However in financial terms, Linux seems to be worth almost as much as in technical issues. On June 2004 he moved to Portland and, since RedHat and VALinux (now VA Software) became public, he suddenly became a millionaire. He had received stocks as gratitude, and his net worth shop up roughly USD $20 million.

These days, Linus keeps on taking care of his 3 daughters and the Linux Kernel development, more as a spiritual leader coordinating efforts via the Linux Foundation, and keeping away misuse of the Linux trademark through the Linux Mark Institute.

<g:plusone href="http://bloggermind.net/tech-news/geek-celebrities/richard-stallman/"></g:plusone>

Imagine Santa Claus as young. Imagine he’s a free software radical. Even more, imagine he founded the Free Software Foundation. You’re seeing Richard Stallman in your mind .

The source of wisdom and inspiration for many programmers around the globe, Richard is well-known for criticizing the use of “Linux” for talking about the full, Linux-based Operative System “GNU-Linux”.

Stallman was born in 1953 in New York City, and got a BA in Physics from Harvard, in 1974. He enrolled at MIT and became an usual in the MIT’s AI Lab. In the late 70′s and early 80′s, closed-source proprietary software became more common. Actually, an incident with a printer (Stallman was denied access to the driver source code: he tried to modify it in order to send messages to users when the printer finished a job or was unavailable) triggered him to become a Free Software activist.

In 1983 Stallman began the GNU project, aimed to create a free and open source operative system. Soon after, he founded a non-profit organization to employ programmers and provide a legal infrastructure: the Free Software Foundation.

In 1991 only a part of the operative system (although the most important one) was missing: the kernel. That’s when Linus Torvalds created Linux, and it was adopted in order to complete the GNU/Linux project.

Richard is, certainly, an influential person. He has had many personal interviews with presidents all over the world, including Venezuela, India, Ecuador, and others. His constant efforts to promote and improve Free Software, as well as the handling of English, French and Spanish, make him a respected speaker.

Stallman’s only personal computer is a Lemote Yeeloong Netbook, chosen because it can run 100% free software even from a BIOS Level. He doesn’t use a mobile phone, nor does he recommends it, due to “harmful privacy issues”. He doesn’t like using a browser, but fetches pages via “wget” (a command which gets the full source HTML of a web page) and reads it in his email inbox.

Lately, many Free-Software leaders have criticized Stallman about “fundamentalist” positions. Nevertheless, his position as a founder makes his biography worth checking out.

Is great to hear that 64-year-old Helen Mirren is known to tweet, people in the Oscar spotlight are using their online presences to communicate without their publicists telling them what to say. Thank God for this Information Age enabled mass communication via people’s smart phones. That said, the nominees have yet to use Twitter to Oscar voters on the lobby or virally change their chances of winning an Academy Award. But Sadly not every one is on this Information Age Ride, As scary as it can be, none of the current Actors in a Leading Role nominees use Twitter, not even have personal Sites or Facebook Pages, Well maybe they focus all their attention on their movie making jobs, but come on! we want to see that everyone is Geeking their way into Life these days, So we are giving away our Anti-Geek awards for these Actors, check it out
