<g:plusone href="http://bloggermind.net/tech-news/is-google-pagerank-gone-or-is-just-a-tweak-away/"></g:plusone>

So I was creating a blog for a client today and came to my attention that my PageRank bar was returning a 0 or a N/A ( Not Available ) answer, I did not pay that much attention to it, because some times after long hours of work on Firefox, some add-ons crash , so I said to myself, since I was not writing articles today, there was no need for SEO at the time.

But later forums and groups had mixed reactions when they saw that their Google Toolbars and other SEO plugins that had the PageRank Checker where returning values of 0 or N / A. The most reliable PR Checker (Google Toolbar) showed the same error.

After speculation, I came to the conclusion that Google had removed the Google PageRank. But then I thought that Google was not going to take such a drastic measure. But what if it did? Where was all the SEO businesses and gurus out there going to end since their main Website Rate was gone?

After many hours of browsing I came across a Google+ Share John Mueller, ( John Mueller’s Blog ), who is a webmaster trend Analyst at Google Switzerland, share this on his wall

From the update: “It turns out Pagerank is not dead after all. Google has simply updated the URL which is used to query it, which has caused various toolbars and websites to stop reporting the number. Dave Naylor spotted the update and has subsequently updated his own tool, which is now once again reporting PR accurately.”

PageRank is still alive in the Toolbar but Google changed the lookup URL. This change has caused third party tools from looking up a page’s PageRank. If you use Internet Explorer and turn on the Google Toolbar, you will still be able to look up the Toolbar PageRank score. But you may not be able to do so if you use a third party tool, not until they update their lookup scripts, or you can just hack them like I did with the SEO Status PageRank/Alexa Toolbar from Ruby Web.

The Old URL:

http://toolbarqueries.google.com/search?client=navclient-auto&features=Rank&ch=8f3b58e04&q=info:[URLHERE]

The New URL:

http://toolbarqueries.google.com/tbr?client=navclient-auto&features=Rank&ch=8f3b58e04&q=info:[URLHERE]

So don’t Panic Google hasn’t abolish PageRank ( YET )

<g:plusone href="http://bloggermind.net/tech-news/firefox-localization/"></g:plusone>

I found this little tweak looking for a way to change Firefox’s Language in seconds without having to uninstall and then install, since I write in several blogs in different languages this little trick really helped me, mostly when you have to prepare tutorials that need images to guide your visitors without confusing them with a language they are not used to, turning you’re your hard work off the toilet. Maybe you will find other ways this tweak can be useful if so share it with us at the comments section. Now Lets get to work.

First you need to install the Firefox language package that suites your needs, in my case it will be Spanish which uses the iso code es ; you can find your language code here: Codes for the Representation of Names of Languages and then copy the ISO 639-1 Code that corresponds to it.

With your Language code in hand, go to the Firefox Language Repository, at http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/latest/ ,

Then select your Operating System:

mac=MAC , win32=Windows , linux-i686=Linux

Now select the XPI folder which contains just the language packages

Now select your language code ( In my case es_ES ) and click it ,

It will be downloaded and installed on your computer automatically

You will be asked to restart Firefox, Do it

After restarting, your Firefox Browser will be in the language you just installed

If your language still does not comes up, or if you want to change it to another language previously installed, then you must change to default language by:

Opening the about:config page via the location bar, like you open a web site. Just type about:config and press enter, then press the I will be Careful button

Use the Filter bar at the top of that page to quickly locate the locale string preference; Type general.useragent.locale and enter your language code, restart Firefox and you are done.

If you want to change it back to another language just do the about:config thingy all over again and type the language code you need.

This is a very useful way to change between languages without having to install a new instance of Firefox. Hope it Helps.

Am I a Geek? Lets find out…

The term geek has traditionally been one that is used in a nearly derogatory manner towards those that value intellectual stimulation and studying deep into various fields such as science, technology, and art. Geeks have always been absorbed into learning as much as they can about their interests and surroundings, sometimes putting themselves at the risk of foregoing social norms.

This can make geeks appear strange to much of society, often making them the target of mockery and even ridicule.

However, in the last few years, the term “geek” as well as the people that proudly call themselves geeks have enjoyed a surge in popularity and social acceptance. More than ever, intelligence is valued over traditional forms of popularity, especially in adolescents. For instance, it is just as common to see geeks interacting with members of the opposite sex as sports jocks today, whereas just a few years ago they were a much more isolated group.

This rise in popularity of geeks can be attributed to a few causes. The first, and perhaps most relevant, is the rise in popularity of the World Wide Web. The Web has caused the average person to have less of a fear concerning computers and technology then they did just a few years ago. This has, in turn, allowed the average person to become more familiar with the world in which technologically-adept geeks thrive. Since many IT professionals that work in the corporate environment are self-proclaimed geeks, their abundance in numbers has shifted the perception of geeks from that of non-conforming outsiders to that of any other person with acceptable idiosyncrasies.

Another contribution to the popularity of geeks is the fashion world’s acceptance and promotion of “geek chic.” More than ever before, fashion designers are spinning the traditional look of what the common perception of how a geek dresses into designs that are just as at home on the runway as they are in a computer lab. Additionally, the popularity of portable devices such as mp3 players, laptop computers, and mobile phones has caused fashion designers to accessorize these otherwise geeky tools into their ensembles.

The more that our society becomes reliant on technology and science, the higher percentage of geeks there will be among the population. Geeks’ devotion to learning, knowledge, and academia has always ensured that many of them enjoy higher stations in life as a result of their accomplishments. Now, more than ever, is a great time to enjoy being known as a geek.

Are you shopping for geek gifts for a geek friend? Is your geek friend into technology and gadgets? Getting the perfect gifts for him can be very frustrating because, most often than not, the things that bring a smile into his face cannot be normally found in malls or your local gift store. Though finding an amazing gift for your geek buddy can be quite a challenge, it does not have to be a chore. To find the perfect gift, begin by thinking about what type of a geek your friend is and what he is interested in. Is he the James Bond-type, or much more like the mathematician-type of geek? Or maybe he is a survivalist-type of geek?

If you have a James Bond-type of a geek friend, for instance, spy on your geek gifts recipient and check to see if he has been hiding his embarrassment for his quite-obsolete cell phone or is secretly drooling at the sight of his rich friends’ smart cell phones; perhaps it is time that you should buy him one of those hot, new smart phones! He would love to see himself as the next James Bond guy and a unique, rugged- or retro-looking wristwatch will surely complete his high-tech gadgets.

Granted, Swiss knives are not anymore the hot items that they used to be, but a lot of people (geeks included) still love their handiness and utility, and your geek gifts recipient would appreciate one too, especially if he doesn’t have one yet. Tired of giving Swiss knives? Other MacGyverish ideas are multi-function flash lights or those which fit snugly on or atop their wearer’s ears, handy for jobs involving aiming a light while working with both hands!

Your Sherlock Holmes-type geek of a friend would greatly appreciate inexpensive, security-type toy gadgets such as laser trip wires or motion-activated gizmos. These toys are used by geeks who love to wire them around their house or near their bedroom, to let them know if someone is approaching or not! Other geek toys that Sherlock Holmes types would love to have are inexpensive book vault safes, hidden wall or outlet safes, cheap listening device kits, various kinds of intruder alarms like Google Spy Science, water-soluble security papers that are useful for sending secret messages, and a variety of USB locks.

By the way, have you heard of the product called Survival Kit in a Sardine Can and other similar products? Now those are perfect for your true-blue Survivalist-type of geeks!

Your DOS/ASCII or Linux-and/or-BSD-loving, Windows-bashing type of geek friend, similar to the Mathematical or Mathematician-type of geeks, would love all sorts of toys and other items featuring the ubiquitous, mostly yellow-colored ASCII smiley characters or Tux, the predominantly yellow, black, and white-colored Linux penguin mascot, or even Beastie, the predominantly red-colored BSD Operating System mascot who wields a trident spear.

Additionally, Mathematical or Mathematician-type geeks are also suckers for all sorts of puzzles, IQ or otherwise, but most especially the ‘mathematical’ kinds! But of course, to avoid embarrassment, check first to see if your geek buddy hasn’t seen or done the puzzle toy that you have in mind before purchasing it for him. Also, have you heard of the Shake Powered Calculator or the Roll-up Calculator or even the Water-Powered Calculator? Mathematical or Mathematician-type geeks would also greatly appreciate them!

Conservation-conscious, Mother Earth types of geeks, on the other hand, admire all sorts of toys made of recycled materials. Examples of this are the Scrap Metal Sculpture series of toys.

Lastly, have you heard of the product called LED Binary Watch and other similar-themed products? These are just the type of toys that the I-only-speak-in-Binary or hexadecimal type of geeks would die for!

So there you have it; just some geek gifts ideas for your geek buddy. There are plenty more out there. All you need to do is to invest some of your valuable time to look for them and to think a little bit out-of-the-box.

Do you remember the floppy disk? Well I think the new generations don’t even know what a Floppy disk Is, just as I was telling my 13 year old son yesterday about the Audio Cassettes, and he just put that awkward face that says ” What are you talking about ” that’s when I realized I am old, well that is the same situation with the floppy disks, they where the only way to transfer a file from one pc to another, even to install Windows 95 or 98 at their early years you needed a floppy to get it running, windows 95 was compiled in about 30 floppy disks that you have to change one by one in every installation and took about 4 hours to install, Games use to come in Floppy Disks some times in 5 1/4 Floppies, I remember playing my new G.I. Joe Game on my Commodore 64, I inserted the Disk, Load it and went to have lunch then I returned and I was ready to play ( It took about 30 minutes to load ) and now we complain when our PC doesn’t start in less than 45 seconds; Well this is the end of an Era. For does of you that have never seen a Floppy Disk, here is a Photo…

Sony announced on April 23rd that they will be discontinuing the classic 3.5 inch floppy disk. An end to nearly a 30 year history of the disk. According to Sony, they introduced the 3.5 inch floppy disk size to the world in 1981, and began sales within Japan in 1983. Sony had shipped approximately 47 million disks within the country at its peak around the year 2000, but that number had fallen to around 8.5 million by 2009.

So for those of you that are still dusting you Floppy Drive to be in optimal conditions, Its time to buy a USB Drive.

Girls - line up as here are 8 reasons you want to be dating a geek! If, you've never dated a geek before... well... lets see what you're missing out on?

<g:plusone href="http://bloggermind.net/tech-news/life/8-reasons-smart-girls-should-date-geeks/"></g:plusone>

Girls, here are the top eight reasons you should consider dating a geek!

1. Geeks will look after you.
Geeks are sweet and caring individuals who have their heart set in the right place. They know what is feels like to be tormented and teased through high school wedgies and toilet dunkings – and wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. A geek will look after you better than any jock could.

2. You’ll never run out of conversation with a Geek
Super intelligence makes for great conversations on just about everything! Even if they’ve got no clue on a topic, they could Google it and grasp any topic from rocket science to such as South Africa and The Iraq and everywhere and such as. There’s no running out of conversation with a geek.

3. Geeks will do the thinking for you!
Of course this will come in handy for you… Think trivia nights, removing viruses from your computer, calculating the cost-per-wear of your new Jimmy Choos before you can say “does it come in pink?” This means your pretty brain free to focus on the important things. Like World Peace, or what’s going to go with those new shoes???

4. You’ll have your own little project
A project that will keep you amused for hours! Your geek will usually come in a standard packed geek uniform and haircut so you may be required to play a little dress ups to upgrade your model to geek 2.0. Like most girls that slap on shadow and lippy, you are privy to fashion… a geek appreciates someone who is an expert in a field in which they are not. Manicure your geek with a well chosen haircut, come new clothes, a little Vitamin D and voila!

5. Geeks are free on weekends
Oh God! The tragedy… Football… Baseball… Basketball! Who needs to watch men chase a ball around? Not Geeks! With your Geek, you’ll be able to indulge in date ideas! with visits to the art gallery, walks in the park and dinners out on the weekends. With the odd occasion of online adventure gaming – which of course you could always learn to play by creating a basic profile – you could be a princess on a quest!

6. You’re the one!
Right after the internet, that is. But, think of it this way – a Geek has spent much of his time one-on-one with the Internet. No doubt He’s ready for a change – and the fact that you’re 3-D, well it’s a whole new dimension yet to be explored!

7. His friends are lovely
A Geek’s friends are sweet and sincere… and as fun as he is. Think social interactions a quiet weekends playing Everquest at home, giving you all the time to shop with your friends. You’ll be able to shop without care for you know your Geek won’t be with the boys at strip clubs, drinking too much or flirting with others.

8. Geeks have money
Geeks are far too clever to be on welfare. In most cases they are in high-level, high paying jobs. In most cases they’ve already bought the gadgets they need to keep themselves amused – you’ll be next in line for the spoiling.

<g:plusone href="http://bloggermind.net/tech-news/geek-celebrities/the-open-source-billionaires/"></g:plusone>

Ok so you have heard of Open Source, and for those who haven’t, here is the definition that the “ Open Source Initiative” gives us:

Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in.

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) is a non-profit corporation formed to educate about and advocate for the benefits of open source and to build bridges among different constituencies in the open-source community.

Some consider open source a philosophy, others consider it a pragmatic methodology. In plain English, Open Source is a license given to certain applications and software which code is open to the public so you can download it tweak it, change it, improve it and upload it again, that is how most amazing programs are build, like MySQL, Trolltech, Mozilla, Thunderbird , and that is why we love Open Source, Is free, is constantly improving itself, more apps are on the way, No more money to spend… But wait, so I understand that there are such great human creatures in this world that will work for hours and hours, skip their bedtimes, meals.. just for helping others get such software and tools to get their daily lives running? Well that sounds great, but I don’t think that is their final goal, Everything starts with a great Idea and the means to help others for free but rewards always comes, Just like Linus Torvalds , he is worth $20 Bs , of course he is a great and amazing guy and he deserves every penny and maybe he is one of the good open source guys who really didn’t want anything in return and like him there are many, but there are others that will think, wow ill come up with an idea put it in paper begin coding upload it one the web call it Open Source so everyone on this world would help and improve it and when billions of people depend on it I will claim my share, as the founder and owner I will sell it for millions. Take a look at this numbers: Here are some companies that since 2005 have been bought summing up Billions, like: Sun Microsystems announcing the purchase of open source pioneer MySQL for $1 billion, Nokia agreed to pay $153 million for the open source mobile-software maker Trolltech; Money also comes from selling add-ons, service contracts, and hardware to go with the software. Mozilla gets most of its money from Google, which pays to be the browser’s default search provider which was worth between $1.5 billion and $4 billion.

So this is what I think, there are no Open Source Billionaires but there are Open Source Millionaires they will not earn Billions like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs but they will earn Millions and hopefully some will get into Fortune’s 500, but there is no poverty in the Open Source World. And I don’t have a problem with that, because their Idea was great, they tried to help other people with their knowledge , everyone helped and years after they are been rewarded. Just like the expression “Don’t Re-invent the Wheel…Improve It”, just like the The Light bulb OpenSource Project: 1st light bulb that was built by Humphry Davy (an Englishman) in 1809. Thomas Alva Edison improved the invention and based his improvements on a patent he purchased from inventors Henry Woodward & Matthew Evans who patented their bulb in 1875.

As you can see helping others always gets rewards, every software out there that was made with helping others in mind, maybe some of them had a hidden agenda of becoming millionaires, well it doesn’t matter, what really matters is that they tried to help in their own way.

SO KEEP IT UP AND DON’T BE ASHAMED TO SHOW OFF YOUR MILLIONS YOU ARE OUR CELEBRITIES..OUR GEEK CELEBRITIES AND YOU DESERVE EVERY PENNY
