What is a Geek?

geek_panties

Am I a Geek? Lets find out... The term geek has traditionally been one that is used in a nearly derogatory manner towards those that value intellectual stimulation and studying deep into various fields such as science, technology, and art. Geeks have always been absorbed into learning as much as they can about their interests and surroundings, sometimes putting themselves at the risk of foregoing social norms. This can make geeks appear strange to much of society, often making them the target of mockery and even ridicule. However, in the last few years, the term "geek" as well as the people that proudly call themselves geeks have enjoyed a surge in popularity and social acceptance. More than ever, intelligence is valued over traditional forms of popularity, especially in adolescents. For instance, it is just as common to see geeks interacting with members of the opposite sex as sports jocks today, whereas just a few years ago they were a much more isolated … [Read more...]

How To Be A Blogging Idol Instead Of An Idle Blogger

BloggyIcon

To be successful at Search Engine Optimization, it's important that you continually test out new theories and ideas. Before I use new SEO techniques on a client's website, I always test them on one of my own. In order to better understand the application of SEO to blogs, I decided to implement the following experiment: I would create a blog for each American Idol contestant. Using a pseudonym, I would blog each candidate until they got booted off the show. Once the final 12 candidates were decided, I would step up my posting pace. Being that this was an SEO project, I didn't aim to provide any valuable insights into the candidates...I only planned to "blurb" news articles that mentioned each contestant. The goal at the end of the project (besides gaining useful knowledge) was to have 1-2 "sustainable" blogs in place, while generating massive traffic the week of the final show. Several weeks into the project, I discovered two things: The Bo Bice Blog received considerably more … [Read more...]

Linus Torvalds

What is the relation between Servers, the OLPC initiative, and films (like Titanic) ? The answer is Linux: an operative system based, like all operating systems, in a kernel. Yes! Even Microsoft admitted that 60% of their web servers run over Linux, instead of Windows Server. And over 95% desktop and server computers in the film industry run over Linux, too. It's worth noting, however, than even though the Linux (GNU/Linux) operating system is largely based on community-contributed software, the most important and central part of the system was an idea developed by one single person. His name: Linus Torvalds. He's an interesting guy, and a single article wouldn't be able to describe him. However, I'll try to give you a context for further research and maybe even inspiration. Linus was born in Helsinki, Finland, on December 28 1969. He attended the University of Helsinki graduating in 1996, with a master's degree in computer science. As a cultural note, he's also a 2nd lieutenant … [Read more...]
