The Open Source Billionaires

Ok so you have heard of Open Source, and for those who haven’t, here is the definition that the “ Open Source Initiative” gives us: Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in. The Open Source Initiative (OSI) is a non-profit corporation formed to educate about and advocate for the benefits of open source and to build bridges among different constituencies in the open-source community. Some consider open source a philosophy, others consider it a pragmatic methodology. In plain English, Open Source is a license given to certain applications and software which code is open to the public so you can download it tweak it, change it, improve it and upload it again, that is how most amazing programs are build, like MySQL, Trolltech, Mozilla, … [Read more...]

Linus Torvalds

What is the relation between Servers, the OLPC initiative, and films (like Titanic) ? The answer is Linux: an operative system based, like all operating systems, in a kernel. Yes! Even Microsoft admitted that 60% of their web servers run over Linux, instead of Windows Server. And over 95% desktop and server computers in the film industry run over Linux, too. It's worth noting, however, than even though the Linux (GNU/Linux) operating system is largely based on community-contributed software, the most important and central part of the system was an idea developed by one single person. His name: Linus Torvalds. He's an interesting guy, and a single article wouldn't be able to describe him. However, I'll try to give you a context for further research and maybe even inspiration. Linus was born in Helsinki, Finland, on December 28 1969. He attended the University of Helsinki graduating in 1996, with a master's degree in computer science. As a cultural note, he's also a 2nd lieutenant … [Read more...]

Richard Stallman

Imagine Santa Claus as young. Imagine he's a free software radical. Even more, imagine he founded the Free Software Foundation. You're seeing Richard Stallman in your mind :-P . The source of wisdom and inspiration for many programmers around the globe, Richard is well-known for criticizing the use of “Linux” for talking about the full, Linux-based Operative System “GNU-Linux”. Stallman was born in 1953 in New York City, and got a BA in Physics from Harvard, in 1974. He enrolled at MIT and became an usual in the MIT's AI Lab. In the late 70's and early 80's, closed-source proprietary software became more common. Actually, an incident with a printer (Stallman was denied access to the driver source code: he tried to modify it in order to send messages to users when the printer finished a job or was unavailable) triggered him to become a Free Software activist. In 1983 Stallman began the GNU project, aimed to create a free and open source operative system. Soon after, he … [Read more...]

Linux Virtual Desktops in Windows

150x225_virtualwin

Perhaps the greatest single productivity-boosting feature in Linux is the ability to open several virtual desktops at one time. This allows you to create separate work environments for various simultaneous tasks, such as one with a word processor, image editor, and spreadsheet open for creating a report, and another with e-mail and browser windows active for keeping in touch with co-workers. The multiple desktops let you focus on the task at hand without interruption, but switch to your other active workspace with a single click. [ad#GAtext] Now you can do this on Windows, with VirtualWin VirtuaWin is a virtual desktop manager for the Windows operating system (Win9x/ME/NT/Win2K/XP/Win2003/Vista). It lets you organize applications over several virtual desktops (also called 'workspaces') as  they become an essential part of a productive workflow. It is designed to be simple and elegant to use yet still be highly configurable and extensible.
